Returning to Kim's Gym: A Fresh Perspective

In 2021, after 19 years of owning Kim's Gym, I sold the business.
Even before that—long before COVID—I had already stepped away from coaching. It had been years since I was on the floor, leading a class of kids in my own gym.
But now, after all that time, and under new ownership, I’m back. Not as an owner, but as a coach. Just one class a week.
And let me tell you—it has been mind-blowing.
Imagine walking into a place you built from the ground up, wearing a t-shirt with your own name on it, and realizing… no one knows who you are.
It’s surreal.
And it’s given me a perspective I never expected.
I’ve been journaling after each class, and throughout this semester, I plan to share what I’m learning. My hope is that these reflections help you—whether you're a coach, a leader, or someone simply thinking about the world.
First Take-away: Burnout is REAL
By the time I sold Kim’s Gym, I was 100% burned out.
I didn’t see the joy in the gym anymore.
I didn’t notice the smiles.
I didn’t find the fun.
I had forgotten why I started in the first place.
Burnout is sneaky like that. It blinds you, robs you, and leaves you questioning everything.
And I know some of you are feeling it right now. It SUCKS!
But this time? This time, it’s different.
I’ve had time to step away, reset, and return with fresh eyes.
Now, I can’t help but notice:
✨ The tiny 3-year-old in her brand-new leotard, beaming with excitement.
✨ The kids, who’ve been sitting in school all day, finally getting to move, flip, and just have FUN.
✨ The sheer joy of a child landing a cartwheel for the first time.
✨ And this time? I say YES when a kid asks, “Can we swing on the high bar?”
Because what will they remember?
FUN
MOVING THEIR BODIES
FRIENDS
A BONUS HUG/HIGH FIVE
and.....
swinging on the HIGH BAR!!!!!
Your Turn:
What’s one small thing you can do this week to bring back fresh energy to your work? I’d love to hear your thoughts—drop them in the comments!
A lot of the kids call me different names like coach taco or bob or something random, I don’t know where the names came from but I let them still say those names and I respond in a joking manner, instead of telling them to call me by my real name. Even though it may seem like it’s not appropriate or respectful, they are having fun. I’m sure there’s teachers at school who won’t allow that, the nicknames they’ve called me has spread through out the JCC and there are kids who I don’t know or even seen that calls me the same nicknames. I love that because it shows they talk a bout Kim’s gym out side of class…
